The Origin of Halloween

Where and when did Halloween customs originate?

The many customs we have today in relation to Halloween have their origins in the religious practices of the Romans and the Druids, therefore dating back many centuries. The Romans worshiped various gods and on October 31, a special feast was held in honor of Pomona, goddess of the fruit trees. Later, the Druids, an ancient order of Celtic priests in Britain, made this feast an even more extensive celebration by also honoring Samhain, lord of the dead. This was normally done on November 1 and it was therefore decided to conveniently honor both Pomona and Samhain on October 31 and November 1.

These Druids believed that on the night before November 1 (October 31) Samhain called together wicked souls or spirits which had been condemned to live in the bodies of animals during the year which had just transpired. Since they were afraid of these spirits, they chose October 31 as a day to sacrifice to their gods, hoping they would protect them. They really believed that on this day they were surrounded by strange spirits, ghosts, witches, fairies, and elves, who came out to hurt them. In addition to this, they also believed that cats were holy animals, as they considered them to represent people who lived formerly, and as punishment for evil deeds were reincarnated as a cat. All this explains why witches, ghosts, and cats are a part of Halloween today.

The custom of trick-or-treating and the use of "jack-o'-lanterns" come from Ireland. Hundreds of years ago, Irish farmers went from house to house, begging for food, in the name of their ancient gods, to be used at the village Halloween celebration. They would promise good luck to those who gave them good, and made threats to those who refused to give. They simply told the people, "You treat me, or else I will trick you!"

The apparently harmless lightened pumpkin face or "jack-o'-lantern" actually is an old Irish symbol of damned soul. A man named Jack was unable to enter heaven due to his miserliness, and unable to enter hell because he had played practice jokes on the devil. As a result, he was condemned to wander over the earth with his lantern until judgment day (i.e., the end of the world). The Irish were so afraid that they would receive an identical plight, they began to hollow out pumpkins and place lighted candles inside to scare away evil spirits from their home.

When did the modern Halloween celebration begin?

During the Middle Ages (about 600 years ago), the Roman Catholic Church decided to make the change-over from pagan religion to Christianity a bit easier, and therefore allowed the new converts to maintain some of their pagan feasts. It was agreed, however, that from now on they would be celebrated as "Christian" feasts. So instead of praying to their heathen gods, they would now pray to, and remember the deaths of saints. For this reason the church decided to call November 1 the "Day of All Saints," and the mass to be celebrated on that day "Alhallowmass." In consequence of this, the evening prior to this day was named, "All Hallowed Evening" which subsequently was abbreviated as "Halloween." In spite of this effort to make October 31 a "holy evening," all the old customs continued to be practiced and made this evening anything BUT a holy evening!

Halloween today.

You would have to agree that today Halloween is most definitely not a holy evening! This annual event is far from the harmless, innocent tradition it is promoted to be. Many dread this "holy" evening as they think what could happen to them, their property, and/or their children! Consistent with its historical roots, this evening is characterized by fear and frequently arouses dormant fears in many. The fear generated by this event is symbolic of the fear which plagues so many in our modern, morally bankrupt world. It is a gripping fear for an unknown and very threatening future, a fear caused by a gnawing inner emptiness.

And there is NOTHING "cute" about witches and devils. Christians are losing the minds of their children by foolishly opening the gates to the enemy (through TV, movies, public education, pagan/Catholic holidays such as Halloween, etc.). Witchcraft is no longer cute and funny; it never was, but it especially is not cute in this late day, as thousands of teenagers are taking it seriously. Paul warns Christians that those who flirt with witchcraft will be excluded from the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:20).

The ancient Druids were the "priests" of the Celtic religion. The Druid priests practiced horrible, mass human sacrifices on Halloween (although some modern pagans attempt to deny this fact, at least in public). Tacitus (the Roman historian) confirms this fact. The feast of Samhain (pronounced "sow-win") was the feast of the dead. At this time, as we have seen, it was believed that the veil between the living and the dead (i.e. spirit world) was at its thinnest. The veil between the spirit world and the living may indeed be at its thinnest at this time - not just on Halloween, but during this whole final age. However, it is not DEAD people, but DEVILS who are close at hand, ready for "communion" (1 Timothy 4:1, 2 Timothy 3:8). How long will it be before these devils once AGAIN (as with the Druids of old) begin to move mankind to practice the human sacrifices the Bible predicts will intoxicate Rome (Revelation 17:6)?

Should Christians hold similar 'alternatives' on Halloween?

Christians should not hold similar "alternatives" on Halloween but hit the streets and confront the world with strong preaching or they should gather together for fervent prayer. Should such a night be an evening for fun, games, and "mock" divination for discerning Christians? Is there not a cause? Can we not rejoice in Christ in fellowship, spiritual songs, soul winning, and prayer, or must we imitate the joy of pagans and Catholics? What does it teach children when we train them that they must always have a "Christian" imitation of pagan fun? Will not many children soon realize that the world can "out-do" the Christian on pagan ground? Children enjoy holy fun and recreation but attempting to "Christianize" divination is wrong. There are many who teach that there is merit in attracting children to churches, away from a dangerous environment. Yet, many churches have become increasingly pagan and grotesque every year to attract the kids (who have been raised on horror movies with millions of dollars of special effects). "Hell houses" with rape, murder, suicide, blood and violence, acted out, etc. are sadly, becoming increasingly common in churches on Halloween. The point is that Halloween is a pagan and Roman Catholic festival. Fundamental Christians should not have witches and skeletons on their doors.

How do we find forgiveness and peace today?

In the Bible ALONE will you find the ONLY answer to the deep yearning of your heart. ONLY when God becomes your God through Jesus Christ, you will find rest at last and you will answer to the true purpose of human existence, namely, to honor, serve, and enjoy our Creator.

Is the God of heaven and earth YOUR God? If not, seek Him TODAY, while He still may be found.

In the end, our only hope is Jesus Christ because ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord and God commended his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved because whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

God, manifested in Jesus Christ, invites you to Himself in His Word. Turn to the gospel of Matthew and read chapter 11:28:

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest!"

Those who insist on seeking inner peace without being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ will have to endure eternal misery without God. God does not desire the eternal misery of man and therefore He also extends this invitation in Ezekiel 33:11:

"As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked (i.e. Sinner) but that the wicked turn from his way and live! Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways: for why will ye die?"

Pensacola Tornado

Found this video clip (headsup... it has some strong language) tonight of one of the tornadoes that hit Pensacola today (more clips)



My daughter called me this morning as she was going to the store. A few minutes later around 11am, she called again saying that a tornado just hit and when she came outside, the parking lot was full of flipped cars!

We are thankful to God that her car only had one shattered window, still intact, and she wasn't hurt. It was still storming as it had been all morning as she drove away from the black sky which was away from her house. "I kept driving towards the light!" And eventually she make it home after passing down trees, broken telephone poles and flooded streets.

Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt in Pensacola that we know of at this time. Praise the Lord!

She was protected also when hurricane Ivan hit a few years ago. Her house was fine but where she was staying, that roof blew off in the middle of the night and they all had to seek shelter at a nearby church in the worse part of the storm. The damage afterwards was horrendous as some houses were simply gone! Sadly, there was also loss of life in Ivan.

Proverbs 18:10 says "The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."

May we always put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone!

I don't like pain nor do I enjoy suffering, however, as we humble ourselves before the Lord and say, "Your will be done", He gives us the grace to endure both.

Hebrews 12:2 says, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

James 1:2-4 says, "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

1 Peter 1:6,7 says, "Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ."

1 Peter 4:12, 13 says, "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy."

And Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, "And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

The testimony of former County Tyrone Orange Chaplain and Lecturer, Paul Stewart (Ireland)

My name is Paul Stewart. I come from a family which includes a long line of Orangemen. My father is an Orangeman, so was his father before him and his father before him. In fact my great grandfather built the Orange Hall in which my family lodge - "Ballynakelly Rising sons of Ulster" No. 157 now sits.

As a child, I grew up going to Sunday school, church, band parades, the "Twelfth" and the "last Saturday" (the Royal Black Preceptory parade in August). I got saved at the tender age of ten although I soon lost interest in the things of God as I followed my mates and their interests. At the age of 12, I joined a band and looked forward to the big parading days. I left the band at 16 years old and drifted, not knowing what I wanted out of life. Praise the Lord for his grace as in February 1984 I came back to the Lord.

I didn't join the Orange Order at the eligible age of joining (17 years old) because, having just come back to the Lord, Christ was the only One I wanted to serve. In April 1988 I got married. During this time the "Anglo Irish Agreement" came along accompanied with the banning of many Loyalist parades. We also seen the acceleration of the Pan-nationalist attack upon Protestantism and loyalism. Instead of looking to God in theses times I foolishly looked to Orangeism for our salvation.

However, Psalm 118 v 8 says, "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."

I joined the Orange Order in 1990 and became immediately hooked and heavily involved. Exodus ch 20 v 3 commands, "thou shalt have no other gods before me," but, unfortunately, I was too busy to see this.

Joel Patten was the Worshipful Master of Killyman District (founder of the 'spirit of Drumcree'), so I made a point of getting to know him. My own private lodge had an alcoholic bar in it . In fact, on one particular night the men couldn't open the lodge because they were so drunk. I left the hall disgusted , intending to leave the Orange Order. However, Joel Patton persuaded me to stay so I transferred to his lodge No. 1620, a predominately Christian lodge in Dungannon, Co.Tyrone.

I was now part of, what I felt was, the best district in Ulster - "Killyman" (the biggest in County Tyrone). As a Christian I was quickly promoted to Chaplain. At our district meetings we were really doing things for Ulster but more needed to be done. I became an Orange Lecturer missing many church prayer meetings to learn the degrees. In short, the Orange had taken over my life.

Then came 'Drumcree one'. I spent most of that time on "the hill" or blocking roads somewhere at the command of my superiors. The Orange Order was revived and there seemed a greater unity in it at grass roots. Joel and a few others decided to harness this enthusiasm by creating a reform movement within the Order which he called the 'Spirit of Drumcree.' We wanted to make the Orange Order more effective against the Republician onslaught. He decided to organise a mass Orange Rally in the Ulster Hall. The rally was a great success but afterwards this man handed me a leaflet relating to the spiritual errors within the Loyal Orders, written by Paul Malcomson.

I knew this leaflet was true as, I had reached the highest degree in the Loyal Orders - the Red Cross degree of the Royal Black Institution. When I travelled through the Royal Arch Purple degree, I suffered quite a cruel and degrading initiation. I was forced to walk over holly leaves in my bare feet whilst my ankles were violently beaten with sticks. I also had to step in and out of ice cold water. I didn't know what I had done or what they were trying to teach me as I was I was half-stripped, blind-folded and totally disorientated.

The Bible says in II Thessalonians ch. 3 vv 6-7, "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you"

One of the things that most disturbed me about the Royal Arch Purple initiation was the fact that when I was being prepared for my initiation a piece a purple ribbon was tied unto my trousers, later on in the ceremony I was shown the ribbon and told that I "received it in darkness and brought it forth to a marvelious light." As a committed Christian I knew I was already in the light.

This teaching mocks the teaching of Scripture in 1 Peter 2: 9 which says, about Christians only, "Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

What was even more disturbing was the fact that countless unsaved Orangemen are given this false hope. Every Royal Arch Purpleman whether saved or not is told he has received the light or that he is in the light. This is probably one of the reasons why most Orangemen see no need of salvation.

Paul cauntions the Church in Galatians ch. 1 vv. 6-8, "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed"

After reading this leaflet, I contacted Paul Malcomson about three days later. Paul showed me what he had found out from his studies on the Orange Order, Royal Arch Purple and Royal Black Institution. I wasn't one bit shocked as some of those things had troubled me for many years and I just needed someone to tell me the facts. After talking to Paul, I knew what I had to do, so within the week I verbally renounced my sinful oaths of bondage to both the Royal Arch Purple Order and the Black and resigned from both these quasi-Masonic orders. Ephesians 5:11 says, "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."

However, I still remained within the Orange Order. I had a lot of Christian friends in the Loyal Orders so I decided, with Paul's help, to organise meetings in my home and in Orange Halls to inform believers about the many unscriptural practices within the Orders. We saw many men leave the Orders through these meetings. And as a direct result of coming out, we saw their spiritual lives being revived. Joel Patten (our Worshipful Master) and I (Chaplain) decided to disband our own Royal Arch Purple Chapter in our Lodge in Dungannon.

A year later I felt God calling me to separate from the Orange Order as well, so I duly resigned. The Bible says, in 2 Corinthians 6:14-17, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you."

I decided then to help Paul and others spread this important message. I was NOT particularly worried about the opposition to our position or the consequences that came with speaking out against these pagan cults. Although, we learned much about the importance of prayer as we were NOT wrestling against "flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12).

On one particular occasion, I awoke in the morning to find the word TRAITOR painted on the road in bold print outside the front of my family house. However, such actions only served to reinforce my views on the Orders and strengthen my resolve on this subject. Anyway, God was blessing us mightily with many men leaving the Orders. Isaiah 54:17 says, "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD."

I could see that my own spiritual life was being revived as was the lives of the other men that were renouncing these devilish oaths they had taken supposedly in the name of Protestantism.

This whole experience has taught me that everything we do in the Christian life stands or falls on the infallible teaching of God's Word. We must therefore bring everything to the secure test of Scripture. I would say to all who read this, who still remain inside the Loyal Orders, don't take anything for granted but search the Scriptures to see whether these things are true or not. Don't sit in darkness any longer come out to the light and be free.

The Bible says, "The foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity" (2 Timothy 2:19).

So this bird walks into a store...

A seagull in Scotland has developed the habit of stealing chips from a neighborhood shop.

The seagull waits until the shopkeeper isn’t looking, and then walks into the store and grabs a snack-size bag of cheese Doritos.

Once outside, the bag gets ripped open and shared by other birds.

The seagull’s shoplifting started early this month when he first swooped into the store in Aberdeen, Scotland, and helped himself to a bag of chips. Since then, he’s become a regular. He always takes the same type of chips.

Customers have begun paying for the seagull’s stolen bags of chips because they think it’s so funny.

A Visit to California State Capital Building

Last week I visited the state capital building of California which like Washington DC and all US government buildings, is riddled with Freemasonry symbols.

And once you begin to see them, it becomes clear that our government was founded not on Christian principles but rather on the secret & occultic ideas of Freemasonry.

The State Seal of California features the Roman 'goddess of wisdom' whose Latin name is Minerva (or Athena in Greek).

Besides Athena and Minerva, other names for this goddess/demon are:

According to John Robison's "Proofs of a Conspiracy" (1798), the third degree of the Bavarian Illuminati was called Minerval or Brother of Minerva, in honor of the goddess of learning. Later, this title was adopted for the first degree of Aleister Crowley's OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis) rituals.

I found the following very interesting from "En Route to Global Occupation" by Gary H. Kah:

John Robison, an eighteenth century historian and a prominent Mason, was entrusted with some of the original documents and correspondence of the Illuminati. In his book, Proofs of a Conspiracy, written in 1798, he reproduced major segments of the Illuminati's original writings. Robison stated, "the express aim of the Order was to abolish Christianity, and overturn all civil government" (John Robison, Proofs of a Conspiracy. Boston: Western Islands, 1967, p.60). He went on to quote Weishaupt as stating that the plan for a New World Order can succeed "in no other way but by secret associations, which will by degrees, and in silence, possess themselves of the government of the States, and make use of those means for this purpose . . . " (Ibid., 106).

Using deception and intrigue, Weishaupt and his inner circle of adepts succeeded at gaining the support of Germany's Masonic lodges. "All these branches were controlled by the twelve leading adepts headed by Weishaupt, who at the lodge in Munich held in his hands the threads of the whole conspiracy" (Nesta Webster, World Revolution, p.20). Mackey admits to the initial success of the Illuminati, commenting:

The Order was at first very popular, and enrolled no less than two thousand names upon its registers, among whom were some of the most distinguished men of Germany. It extended rapidly into other countries, and its Lodges were to be found in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Italy (Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, p.346-347).

In 1782, at the Masonic Congress of Wilhelmsbad, Weishaupt's Illuminati solidified its position among Europe's secret societies as the undisputed leader of the occult one-world movement. Around the same time, Weishaupt also succeeded at forging an alliance between Illuminized Freemasonry and the growing Rothschild banking network, thereby giving the Order the financial means to begin to carry out its plans (Webster, World Revolution, p.20 and Count Egon Caesar Corti, The Rise of the House of Rothschild. Boston: Western Islands, 1972, p.ix).

As a result of this alliance with the international financiers, the Freemasons regained the banking prominence once held by the Templars, and the Illuminati gained momentum. H.L. Haywood observes, "It took root, it grew, it flourished, it gathered into itself more men of royal and noble titles than were possessed by the Hohenzollern family; even the Jesuits joined it" (Haywood, Famous Masons and Masonic Presidents, 151-152).

Although Weishaupt's Illuminati was exposed within ten years, he had accomplished more to further "the plan" during this time than all of Freemasonry's efforts of the previous fifty years combined. One reason for his success was that he had gotten many Christian leaders to join the Order by convincing them that the Illuminati was a for the sake of Christ. Robison states, "In this scheme of Masonic Christianity, Spartacus [Weishaupt] and Philo [Baron Von Knigge] laboured seriously together. Spartacus sent him the materials, and Philo worked them up." (Robison, Proofs of a Conspiracy, p.86).

This apostate teaching, which was presented to Christian initiates, was explained by Von Knigge: "Jesus Christ established no new Religion; he would only set Religion and Reason in their ancient rights. For this purpose he would unite men in a common bond. He would fit them for this by spreading a just morality, by enlightening the understanding, and by assisting the mind to shake off all prejudices. He would teach all men, in the first place, to govern themselves. Rulers would then be needless, and equality and liberty would take place without any revolution, by the natural and gentle operation of reason and expediency. This great Teacher allows himself to explain every part of the Bible in conformity to these purposes; and he forbids all wrangling among his scholars, because every man may there find a reasonable application to his peculiar doctrines. Let this be true or false, it does not signify. This was a simple Religion and it was so far inspired; but the minds of his hearers were not fitted for receiving doctrines. I told you, said he, but you could not bear it. Many therefore were called, but few were chosen. To these elect were entrusted the most important secrets; and even among them there were degrees of information. There was a seventy, and a twelve. All this was in the natural order of things, and according to the habits of the Jews, and indeed of all antiquity. The Jewish Theosophy was a mystery; like the Eleusinian, or the Pythagorean, unfit for the vulgar, and thus the doctrines of Christianity were these they were maintained, like the Vestal Fire. They were kept up, only in hidden societies, who handed them down to posterity, and they are now possessed by the genuine Free Masons." (Ibid., 87).

"Using this cover of working for worldwide Christian unity, Weishaupt was able to gain the backing of numerous credulous leaders who thought they were working for a noble cause. In fact their every move was designed by Weishaupt to nudge the Illuminists one step closer to world domination" (Webster, World Revolution, p.13).

I can think of more than a few Christian leaders who could learn a lesson from this. Christian unity is not something that can be organized; it comes naturally among those who share a common love for Christ. The false ecumenical/interfaith unity being promoted today by the World Council of Churches -- an organization that is strongly influenced by Freemasonry -- is nothing new. It has been used for centuries to try to further the cause of world government. As long as Christians do NOT unite with the peoples of other religions, there can be no world government. This unwillingness of Christians to compromise their faith has been the chief obstacle for the conspirators.

Count Your Blessings

This time of year brings crisp cool days with beautiful changing colors all around us.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and besides all the delicious food and fun times with family and friends, it is a time to be thankful to God as we count our blessings - something we should do every day.

We are all so blessed as the LORD Jesus Christ provides for all our needs daily - THANK YOU, LORD!

May we each have an attitude of gratitude as we speaking blessing to one another along with acts of kindness as we are able.

Jesus is the Bread of Life

Freshly baked bread... yum! When living in Germany, I would buy bread at the corner market which was still warm when I got it home - so delicious!

In the scriptures, Jesus tells us that He is the Bread of Life that came down from heaven and those who believe on Him will have everlasting life.

Taste and see that the LORD is good!
