Home Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth and Its Health Advantages

March 14, 2010 | By Sandy Halliday

Exercise methods, diet recipes or food supplements are believed to be the safe options in staying healthy. Yet, there is a simpler alternative by consuming food grade diatomaceous earth (or DE).

Diatomaceous earth is an all-natural product made from tiny fossilized water plants. Oceans and lakes are rich in diatoms, the microscopic plants diatomaceous earth is made of. After being removed from the vast ocean floor, the processed diatomaceous earth can be used for many purposes. This mineral-based compound contains silicon, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron and other trace minerals that the body needs to stay healthy. These same minerals will improve bodily functions and provide better over-all health.

The diatomaceous earth has the ability to function both as a digestive aid and as a colon cleanser. When food grade diatomaceous earth is fed in adequate daily amounts, it eliminates most intestinal worms and parasites. This promotes proper absorption of nutrients derived from food, which improves existing indigestion problems while producing regular bowel movements. It is less likely for colon diseases to progress sooner. It isn’t even as aggressive to the intestinal mucosa or barrier wall in spite of its aggressive characteristic in warding off diseases.

Food grade diatomaceous earth has been reported in scientific literature to absorb mercury, e-coli, endotoxins, viruses (including polio virus), pesticide residues, drug residues, and perhaps even the toxins produced by some intestinal infections. This is to remove toxins found in the body.

Entering through the bloodstream, diatomaceous earth has the ability to lower bad cholesterol while raising the good cholesterol. It also regulates blood pressure. Hypertension, predominantly present in old age, can be minimized if food grade diatomaceous earth is taken regularly.

Due to the normal wear and tear or lack of calcium absorption in the bones, people experience bone diseases, but with the help of diatomaceous earth, it reduces sore joints and prevents other symptoms associated with osteoporosis.

Aside from these primary health benefits, diatomaceous earth may even replace some of the basic hair products and skin creams. It gives skin a youthful glow, revitalizes hair, stimulates its growth, and restores the shine. It is known to be safe for ingestion by pregnant or lactating women as there have never been any reported cases of withdrawal or side effects.

As diatomaceous earth works its way through the body, it will start to clean out your insides, enabling you to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Diatomaceous Earth - Human Use

Diatomaceous Earth is 84% Silicon Dioxide (Silica)
There is no life without Silica !!

In 1939, the Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, Professor Adolf Butenant, proved that life can not exist without Silica.

In the 2003 book "Water & Salt" Dr. Barbara Hendel states: "Silica it the most important trace mineral for human health!"

Silica plays an important role in many body functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals such as iron.

Lets look at some of the benefits of Silica:*

Lower High Blood Pressure!

Of the thousands of people that are using Diatomaceous Earth, most that have high blood pressure have reported that it has gone down. It has been so thrilling to talk to people all over the United States and have them tell their stories. We are not just talking a few points---we are talking about LIFE-CHANGING numbers. Doctors are amazed--customers are amazed---You will be too.

Lower high Cholesterol!

Just as Diatomaceous Earth has been lowering blood pressure--it has also been lowering cholesterol!!. I have not talked with one person that has high cholesterol that has not had lower numbers after taking Diatomaceous Earth. Most are reporting 40-60 points lower after only 2 weeks on DE. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it works!

Just recieved this feedback from a user:

"I have been on DE for 6 months now and I just had my lab work done. My triglycerides have been reduced from 495 down to 203. I have so much more energy and my hair and nails are growing so much better. My husband has had High Blood Pressure and since being on the dirt, his BP is now in the normal range. It has also helped with my varicose veins and I no longer have any pain from them.."

Rhonda from Louisiana

My joints feel so much better!!

Osteoporosis is a symptom of the aging process. As calcium in our body system depletes, our bones become brittle and weak. Taking only a calcium supplement can not correct or stop this threatening and crippling disease because the body cannot assimilate and make use of the calcium without the presence of silica. Evidence suggests that, instead of affecting healing, supplemental mineral calcium, on the contrary, accelerates the leaching away of bone calcium and thus hastens the degenerative process of osteoporosis and similar diseases that affect the supportive and connective tissues in the human body.

For osteoporosis, silica can stop the pain and even restore the bodies self repair process. Osteoporosis symptoms attack women primarily after menopause but the degenerative process starts much earlier in their younger days. More women are dying of fractures caused by osteoporosis than of cancer of the breast, cervix, and uterus combined.

Silica is responsible for the depositing of minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It speeds up the healing of fractures and also reduces scarring at the site of a fracture. More and more research evidence shows that through a transmutation process, silica is turned into calcium when it is needed. That is why some scientists refer to silica as a precursor of calcium. Even when calcium is insufficient, the body can turn silica into calcium that the bones need.

Natural Weight Loss!

We have been getting hundreds of reports from all over the United States that DE is helping people lose weight. Everyone is saying that DE taken in the morning helps curb their appetite throughout the day. Just one more reason to take it everyday!!
Nature's Internal Cosmetic!

In Europe and Asia Diatomaceous Earth is used extensively as a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. They have no FDA.

Tissue degeneration accelerates due to aging when connective tissue develops an increasing inability to retain moisture when left unassisted. Silica can help slow the degenerative process of connective tissue. With silica, vitality and life, which are often lost as the years accumulate, can be naturally maintained or even restored to your skin. Collagen, largely made up of silica, is the glue that holds us together. If our body has enough silica glucosaminoglycane, the collagen will make us look younger. Silica helps with skin problems and injuries including itching, rashes, abscesses, boils, acne, callouses, warts, eczemas, burns, frostbite, benign skin sores, insect bites and bed sores.

If you regularly follow a silica regimen, your skin will keep its young look. A good silica supplementation program works far better than other products for maintaining healthier and longer lasting collagen.
Hair That Grows!

Hair is natures greatest beauty enhancer. Hair deserves to be pampered. Hair at 90 micrograms per gram is almost as rich in silica as are healthy bones, which contain 100 micrograms per gram. Silica is a major component of hair. Using a good silica supplement should be part of your ongoing hair care program for revitalizing hair. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster and strength.
Teeth and Gums!

By hardening the enamel, silica prevents cavities and preserves teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that causes the loosening of teeth, which could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Silica effectively fights ulceration and the decay of bones, teeth and also lessens inflammation.

Tough As Nails!

Your nail plates are complex protein structures that grow four to five millimeters per month on average. With silica supplementation, fragile nails become normal within a short period of time. Silica will beautify the appearance of your nails and improve their hardness, making them shinier and less prone to breaking.

The restorative effects of silica will be most noticeable on your hair, skin, nails and teeth. Our skin and hair require silica essentially for the same purpose as do other tissues. As we know, the supporting collagen underneath the skin enhances elasticity and beauty. Collagen owes that quality to silica, which provides a beautiful complexion that is more than skin deep.
More Benefits!

* Silica lowers bad cholesterol and raises good
* Silica fades age spots
* Silica stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels
* Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge. It is believed that diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in it's honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
* Silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis.
* It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system.
* Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause
* Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness.
* Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs.
* The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal mucus and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation.
* Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues.
* In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly.
* Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
* The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat.
* Has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects.
* Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension).
* Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia.
* Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas.
* Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart's key blood vessel thus weakening its critical connective tissue and resulting in a greater cardiac risk.
* Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis.
* By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism.
* Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases.
* Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimers disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues. Silica can stimulate the immune system.

Dosage:

Daily silica needs of humans are 20-30 mg. In Years past, our bodies would get enough silica from our diet. Unfortunately, many of the foods we now eat have lost their nutritional value due to soil nutrient depletion, food processing, and chemicals. Supplemental use of Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth is essential to total body health.

In my studies and searches of the internet, people are taking 1 or 2 heaping tablespoons of Diatomaceous Earth every day. Myself and my family take 1 heaping tablespoon per day. We mix it with grapefruit juice. Others are mixing it with water, soda pop, juice, or whatever liquid they enjoy. Some are even putting DE in protein shakes, applesauce and yogurt. Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth is Food Grade and very pure. There is no unpleasant taste. Since it will not dissolve, stirring several times while drinking will prevent settling. Some have experienced higher energy levels, so it is probably better not to take it right before sleeping. No worry about getting too much--any excess silica not needed by the body is automatically eliminated through the blood stream, kidneys and intestines.

DECMEBER 1, 2011 UPDATE

From a comment today:

Here is your explanation of the lead. I hope this helps some readers.

Lead, Arsenic, Aluminum and Mercury…
Vital Trace Elements or Toxic Poisons?

by Dr. William J. Saccoman

Did you know that an apple contains 3-5 mg of aluminum and trace amounts of lead, arsenic and mercury? Micro or trace minerals are essential for good health if they come from an organic or plant source. In contrast, if they come from an inorganic or metallic source, such as heavy metals, they are toxic. For example, iodine in an organic form is necessary for health. Non-organic or metallic iodine in the same amount can kill you.

Why are people frightened of these trace minerals? The reason is well understood.
There have been numerous deaths and birth defects caused by heavy metal poisoning from metals such as lead. People have used arsenic as a poison and pesticide for centuries. The news is filled with grim reports about these substances. However, little is said about the all-critical source. Is it organic or inorganic?

Organic trace minerals are not deposited in the body like inorganic forms of these elements.
Research shows that organic plant-derived trace minerals will actually replace the heavy metals deposited in the body. The heavy metals are then flushed from the body.

There is a huge difference between an organic and an inorganic mineral.
Once a plant source utilizes minerals from the ground, they are digested, making them ionic or electrical in nature. This makes it easier for the body to assimilate and use the minerals at a cellular level. Subsequently, they are not stored or deposited somewhere else in the body. Trace minerals in their inorganic form are not easy for the body to use. They are stored in the tissues and eventually large amounts build up and become extremely toxic.

In the late 1980s an interesting experiment was conducted by Gary Price Todd, MD, author of the book Nutrition, Health and Disease. The study involved individuals with heavy metal poisoning, specifically lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. Patients were placed on a program of full spectrum bio-available organic, micro trace minerals.

After 16 months the study demonstrated reduced levels of toxic metals in the patients. They concluded that organic, ionic minerals naturally chelate or remove the inorganic minerals from the body. Furthermore, ionic minerals cannot be stored in the body for longer than a few hours, they are much like the water soluble vitamins; therefore they cannot build up to toxic levels in the soft tissues. (Todd, Gary P. Unpublished Observations, The Institute of Nutritional Science Journal, June 1996, 1:1).

Another study on trace minerals and detoxification was conducted by Dr. Michael Zimmerman, Chief of Staff of the Specialized Clinic for Chronic Illnesses and Therapy Resistant Patients and Biophysicist, Dr. Fritz Albert Popp in Uberlingen, Germany. They concluded that trace minerals were not toxic, but rather assisted the cells' vital functions and enhanced detoxification as well as accelerated the healing process of chronic illness. (Popp, Fritz Albert. Bio-electronic Response of Cellular Stimulation).

Like lead, mercury and other metals, arsenic is toxic when it comes from an inorganic source. However, from an organic source it is an essential micro-mineral needed by the body in minute quantities (The Nutrition Bible, Joan Anderson and Barbara Deskins, 1995). In a recent study where organic arsenic was given to 12 patients with leukemia, 11 went into remission. The treatment apparently stops cancer cells from reproducing and then they self-destruct (New England Journal of Medicine, November 1998).

AUGUST 25 2017 UPDATE
This morning cam across this 2014 article:

Diatomaceous Earth: The Dirt You Can Eat and 5 Reasons Why You Should
The Alternative Daily -
May 30, 2014

If you were like most kids, you probably enjoyed pretending to eat “dirt cakes,” or perhaps even sampled a some of the brown gritty stuff from time to time. While a little dirt is not going to hurt anyone, some types of “earth” are more beneficial than others.

Often called DE for short, diatomaceous earth is a grayish, talc-like substance that is actually comprised of fossilized remains of single-cell marine phytoplankton known as diatoms, that have skeletons made from 84 percent silica and 20 other minerals.

When it is magnified 7,000 times, DE looks like tiny honeycombs. Mined from dried lake beds that are thousands of years old, DE has an unlimited shelf life as long as it is kept dry.

According to the FDA, food grade diatomaceous earth is “generally regarded as safe,” even for children and pregnant and nursing mothers.

Besides oxygen, silica is the most abundant element on Earth. In 1939, Nobel Prize winner Doctor Adolf Butenant demonstrated how important silica is for life – in fact, it may be the most important trace element in human health. At one point in time, food contained plenty of silica, but because our food sources are so depleted, we are only getting about one third of the silica that we need

Besides being very high in silica, diatomaceous earth also has the following properties:

Very strong negative charge; acts like a magnet to attract harmful materials.
It is extremely hard – in fact, it is a 7 on the hardness scale, where a diamond is a 9.

DE is known mostly for its ability to naturally kill insects and pests such as fleas (this includes intestinal parasites). Because it is so strong, and also sharp, it easily punctures the exoskeleton of insects on a microscopic level – this causes them to dehydrate and perish.

Note: Humans and other animals remain unharmed by this. Keep in mind that it is a physical action that kills insects, not a chemical action. This is why it it does not harm us.

The following are five really neat ways to use this natural and economical substance for overall health and wellbeing.

Cleansing: Because it has a very strong negative charge, DE can easily attach to and escort things like toxins, viruses, heavy metals, bacteria and even radiation from the body. This makes it a great complement to any detoxification program. While diatomaceous earth moves through the stomach and digestive tract, it attracts and absorbs fungi, bacteria, viruses, protozoa, pesticides, E. coli, heavy metals and endotoxins.

The toxins are trapped by DE and carried out of the body. If any larger parasites exist, they are easily “cut up” and killed by its sharp edges. However, DE does not kill beneficial gut bacteria. As the DE passes through the intestines, it actually scrubs the walls clean. Some people who go through this cleansing actually have what is known as a “healing crisis.”

This can cause some mild inflammation as the immune system comes back to life. As parasites die off, they release extra toxins which can cause nausea, pain and cramping. Also, parasites often harbor their own parasites, germs and infections, which can cause additional discomfort. One way to avoid this is to slowly work up to a teaspoon to a tablespoon over the course of a few days or weeks

Reducing blood pressure and cholesterol: Because DE has such a detoxifying effect on the body, it reduces foreign matter and along with it, inflammation. Both of these things can contribute to high blood pressure and elevate blood serum cholesterol.

Joint pain: As we age, we lose calcium and our bones become weak. Unfortunately, just taking a calcium supplement will not correct or arrest this process, simply because the body can’t use the calcium without silica. In fact, calcium may actually accelerate the leaching away of bone calcium and hurry along osteoporosis and other diseases that impact the supportive and connective tissues in the body.

Persons suffering from osteoporosis find that silica can stop pain and help the body repair itself. Silica is so effective because one of its primary functions is to deposit minerals into the bones – mostly calcium. Amazingly, silica can also turn into calcium if needed.

Hair growth: Silica is great for your hair, and it has been said to promote scalp health and hair growth. Hair is rich in silica, like healthy bones, so silica is vital to healthy hair. Incorporating DE into your hair care program is a perfect way to revitalize tired or damaged hair. Silica can help prevent baldness, stimulates hair growth and improves both the shine and strength of hair.

Healthy skin: In Europe, DE is used in health and beauty products for skin, hair, nails, bones and joints. When we age, connective tissue has a difficult time retaining moisture. Silica helps to slow this degenerative process and can restore vitality. Collagen is largely made up of silica, and is the glue that keeps us together. With enough silica we have enough collagen to appear youthful. In addition, silica can assist with skin problems such as rashes, acne, eczema, insect bites and also injuries including frostbite and burns.

Other anecdotal reports regarding diatomaceous earth

    Helps prevent kidney stones
    Decreases vertigo
Helps reduce side effects of menopause
    Helps maintain lung tissue health
    Helps fight urinary tract infections
    Helps reduce symptoms of insomnia
    Boosts metabolism

Because silica is water soluble it is easily absorbed by the intestinal wall. It will not accumulate in the body, so daily supplementation is necessary. Stir the DE frequently while drinking, as it will settle to the bottom.

Start out with 1 tablespoon of DE mixed with water each day. If you really hate the taste, try mixing with coconut water and a teaspoon of raw honey. If necessary, increase to 2 or 3 tablespoons. Again, go slow if you start to feel that you are having a detox reaction.

Some people report feelings of increased energy, so it is not advised to take DE prior to bedtime.

Note: Be sure to always take only food grade DE, as other forms are not considered safe for human consumption.

Cathy,

I assumed all food grade was for human consumption...How do you know WHICH Food grade is and which one is NOT?

Cathy Palmer said...

Yes, I see lead. However, it must not be an issue as I've read in several places that Food Grade DE is safe for human consumption:

(NaturalNews) Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth also known as DE is an overlooked multi-purpose supplement for our body. Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled, one cell algae that is taken and ground into a fine powder. These diatoms are millions of years old and found from salt water and fresh water sources. The fresh water deposits are the ones pure enough for human consumption. One tablespoon a day of this tasteless ingredient mixed in water or your favorite juice is said to do wonders for you inside and out.

Studies have shown Diatomaceous Earth to significantly lower cholesterol by removing plaque and keeping arteries and veins supple. It also helps to regulate blood pressure. But that's not all. DE contains Silica which has been proven to be vital to our survival. Not only does it make our hair thicker and nails stronger, but it also helps our bodies absorb calcium and phosphorus. New studies are finding that silica may be more important for our bones than calcium and that it plays a major role in the healing of osteoporosis.

DE benefits don't stop here. It's a natural detoxifier. It binds with heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum in the body and draws them out for elimination. It's also an internal de-wormer of parasites. DE can remove pinworms, tapeworms, and any other parasite taking up residence in your body. The shape of the diatom is similar to shattered glass. It scratches and punctures the outer surface of the worm and dehydrates it. Parasites have been unable to build a resistance to the DE as well.

Studies have shown NO known side effects to DE except occasional constipation if water intake is low. Children and women pregnant and/or nursing have been able to use this product without incidence. It's even safe to use on the family pet. As with any product do your research and purchase from a reputable retailer. Be sure to purchase the FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth and not pool grade which is chemically treated and toxic for humans and pets.

I purchased DE food chemical codex grade, here in Picayune, Mississippi, where an employee of the company where I purchased it reports that she has been taking it for years! She numerated all the benefits, just as they are listed here. The question I have is, I'm wondering why I cannot find this "Food Chemical Codex Grade" listed anywhere. It's manufactured by a company named RedLake. I had wanted to start taking this, but the one I've seen in the video is "white" and the one I have here is gray.
So! Hoping someone can answer this question, shortly! Thanks, the site has been advantageous. Charyn

I would call the Company back from whom you bought the product from and ask them why the color is different than from their website. Also ask them why the "Food Grade Chemical Codex Grade" label is not on their package. The Company should be able to answer all your questions.

Diatomaceous earth attracts metals and toxins and carries them out of the body with it. So, any lead or aluminum or metals it brings with it go right back out. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had similar difficulties finding "safe" food grade D.E.
No "green" website EVER mentioned that I could accidently buy/be sold food grade D.E. with added pesticides (used to excite insects) and so my first food grade D.E. had pesticides in it!

SHELL FOSSIL FLOUR is D.E. in it's finest, purest form.

I'm a 56-year-old man. I bought my DE from a locally-owned pet shop in Austin, TX. The product is Dr. Goodpet Non-Toxic Yard Spray. A 1.5 lb container cost me about 12 dollars. It's not marked on the package that it's food-grade, but the clerk assured me it was, as she had also been taking DE for her health. This brand is grey-colored, but there are pure white versions if you're picky about color. I take one heaping teaspoon in the morning, stirred into orange juice, to keep my cholesterol down. I'm probably getting much more benefit than I realize!

Hello, I recently found out about DE but have had a little trouble finding the exact questions that I am looking for, maybe someone here can help.

I bought a small bag for myself, my husband, and my two young daughters (ages 4 and 1). My children are on probiotics to help keep up their digestive health. My entire family has had horrible hormonal, digestive, urinary, and skin problems so I'm trying to fix this for my children.

I'm a little nervous to start the DE because I have heard that it can have some flu like symptoms. My mother passed some parasites using a colon cleanse and she was very sick for a couple days. My question is what sypmtoms can I expect to have from using the DE?? I realize these probably vary but I would like to know what I could possibly be in for so i'm not worrying. Also, How much should I give to the kids, and animals for that matter. I have a 40lb dog and a 4lb dog surely it's different amounts for each. How long should I be taking the DE. I've heard different reviews on this.

I have heard that this can help get rid of gluten intolerancy, is this true? What about other food intolerancy or allergies?

Lastly, I've read it kills MOST parasites. Which does it not get rid of? My husband was in Iraq and I truly believe he came back with some sort of parasite, he has horrible problems with digestion and throwing up. What is the difference between the kits that have wormwood etc and just taking DE?

Please SOMEONE help! I'm so interested in using this product as it is all natural but it does make it more difficult to find information! Thanks! :)

Good questions! I too would be interested to hear what others have to say.

Personally, I have not noticed any particular side effect from taking a heaping tablespoon of food grade DE with distilled water almost daily for over a year now.

In response to the person who bought Red Lake Earth. This product is only 50% - 60% diatomaceous earth and the remaining ingredient is volcanic ash. It is not pure and has an acidic pH, not an alkaline pH. Mined in British Columbia, Canada.

Cathy Palmer said...

Went to the Red Lake Earth website:
http://www.redlakeearth.com/index.html

Under FAQ, they say:
"Is our Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth safe?
Our Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth is completely safe for all animals."

Also found this disclaimer:
"Although there are several web-sites out there that indicate all the other benefits of Diatomaceous Earth and the benefits of using DE for human consumption there are no DE products registered with the FDA for Human Consumption. We advise that you do your own research on the benefits of Diatomaceous Earth and make your own decisions. Choosing to use the product for other uses other than what it is registered for is done solely at the risk of the end-user. We are not in the position to advise the use of our RLE products for any other purpose other than what the product is registered for and what is indicated on the packaging."

Personally, I don't trust the FDA but if it's safe for animals, why would it not be safe for humans?

RED LAKE EARTH IS SAFE

Recently there has been some information circulated where products with crystalline silica have been compared to Red Lake Earth which is made from amorphous silica. This comparison is not accurate.

Respiratory Reaction to Red Lake Earth:
A respiratory reaction to Red Lake Earth is extremely unlikely for the following reasons:
 The granulation of Red Lake Earth is 99% within 50 microns and 500 microns, about the
size of icing sugar, with most of the remaining 1% being over 40 microns. These
particles are too large to be inhaled and remain in the lungs.
 Red Lake Earth is manufactured with amorphous silica not crystalline silica.

EPA states:
“Silica, amorphous, fumed (crystalline free) is composed of oxygen and silicon, the most abundant and second-most abundant elements in the earth's crust, respectively. Silicon almost always occurs in combination with oxygen, and a number of naturally-occurring minerals (such as quartz) are pure, or nearly
pure, silicon dioxide.”

“Thus, based on the very low toxicity of silica, amorphous, fumed (crystalline free), the Agency has determined that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm to the U.S. population, including infants and children, from aggregate exposure to residues of silica, amorphous, fumed (crystalline free) and that a tolerance is not necessary.”

In plainer language, there is no risk from amorphous silica.

 The materials in Red Lake Earth do not pose a hazard.
 Red Lake Earth is a naturally occurring blend of diatomaceous earth and montmorillonite
clay. The EPA states: “Inert ingredients are all ingredients that are not active ingredients
as defined in 40 CFR 153.125 and include, but are not limited to... clay and diatomaceous
earth. EPA has exempted inert ingredients from the requirement of a tolerance based on the low toxicity of the individual inert ingredients.”

 The EPA referred to 4 studies on rats and rabbits, much smaller animals than horses, and
found that there was no information that would indicate that amorphous silica was toxic.
The tests covered ingestion, inhalation, dermal irritation and irritation to the eyes.

(continued...)

(continued...)

The conclusions to the studies were that there were no toxicity concerns with amorphous
silica.
 Absorbent Products Ltd. has had the same material tested at various universities and they have found that Red Lake Earth, or finer granulations, is beneficial to the animals and is safe to use. It is actually beneficial if ingested, and is approved for use in feeds at rates up to 2%.

Amorphous Silica is NOT a Hazard:
 There are 2 types of silica, amorphous and crystalline. Red Lake Earth is manufactured
with amorphous silica.
 The EPA…”concludes that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from aggregate exposure to residues of silica, amorphous, fumed (crystalline free). Accordingly, EPA finds that exempting silica, amorphous, fumed (crystalline free) from the requirement of a tolerance will be safe.”, meaning that no harm will result from all dietary and other exposures.
 Crystalline silica is a controlled substance. OSHA has stated that it is related to only the size of particle that would remain in the lungs (respirable size particles) which is between 5 and 10 microns. (The particle size for Red Lake Earth is 99% within 50 microns and 500 microns, with most of the remaining 1% greater than 40 microns. These particles are too large to be inhaled and remain in the lungs.)
 According to OSHA, the types of employees who would be at risk from crystalline silica
would include those involved in sand blasting, foundry work, and stone cutting where the
employee is inhaling high concentrations of crystalline silica for prolonged periods
(usually over 10 years) of a particle size that would remain in the lungs.
 Crystalline silica is used in adhesives, paints, cosmetics, soaps and glass. Normal beach sand is crystalline silica. It is not harmful, other than in very fine particles that remain in the lungs after being inhaled.

CFIA and OMRI Registrations:
 CFIA has registered Red Lake Earth as a diatomite for use in feeds. CFIA would not
grant a registration if it was harmful.
 The Organic Material Review Institute has approved the use of Red Lake Earth in Organic Production. OMRI would not grant approvals to a product that was not safe.
 Red Lake Earth is properly labeled and meets all labeling requirements.
 Red Lake Earth is made from FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth.

ok I bought some DE from amazon it says that it is food grade but also says it is not for human consumption i'm confused it is made by thomas labs. I took 1 and a half teas. before i found on the container that it said not for human use. Should I not use this one and what one should I purchase?

Cathy Palmer said...

Thomas Labs disclaimer reads:

"Product is labeled 'not for human consumption' to meet the legal requirements of the FDA for products sold and marketed for pet use and consumption. While many products sold for "Pet Use" may be similar to products used by humans, Thomas Laboratories is obligated to remain within the boundaries set forth by the FDA regarding correct and current labeling of our products."

If my dog can digest it, so can I.

Thank you for answering so quick, I have one more question. When I took the DE, and by the way I am anonymous above lol, I felt very jittery for more than a few hours I read that it may do that. Should I maybe take a smaller amount and work up from that?

Cathy Palmer said...

It would be best to talk to or write those who make DE as I am no expert at all.

I've never felt any side effects from taking DE and take one heaping tablespoon in distilled water once a day - when I remember to do it that is - lol!

Hi,
I bought a bag of DE a three weeks ago initially to use in getting rid of fleas my pets brought in, so far we are still working on the problem, dusting them, the carpet ect and they also have been taking it in their food. I then started the same day I bought the bag after reading so much about the product before buying it, taking it myself along with my husband. So far he is feeling better. I have never had health problems being in my mid 50's. I have noticed morning back aches have gone away mainly body from sleeping. I have been sleeping much better. I have question however, my husband regularly takes his blood pressure so I thought I would check on mine just for the fun of it. I have seen it go from normal 118/80 to now after three weeks to anywhere from 138/80 - 150 sometimes 160 upper numbers. It has never been this high. numbers seem to hit higher in the evening and before bedtime. Lower in the morning. What is going on? Will it go back down or should I stop taking the product, this is worrying me. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Thanks

Hi Mary,
Very sorry but I really have no idea regarding your blood pressure.

Here is a link to independent analysis of Perma Guard's Food Grade DE (all other food grade DE is just repackaged Perma Guard). It states that absolutely no arsenic was found -- zero! Lead was found but in an extremely small amount.

is the red lake earth diatomaceous earth gray in color safe for human consumption

Cathy Palmer said...

I don't know. Ask Red Lake.

I have the same question as Debbie. I have called Red Lake & left a message & filled out an inquiry online form & submitted it. No response back yet...I bought the Red Lake brand at a tractor supply store. It says Food Grade Codex DE. So now that i read the bag, it says 95% ash & upon opening the bag found out it was gray. I was under the assumption it was the white kind & is there any difference besides the grey being mainly volcanic ash? I bought this for killing fleas & worms in my cats & kittens. Also worried about spreading it throughout the house being all ash, is that really safe? Anyone with any personal info on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank You in advance!

red river and perma guard are both very good products, but for putting in the carpet perm guard doesn't have the clay which is what makes red lake gray and messier for carpet and dogs externally.

Someone with a stent in their heart was wondering if they could take DE? Also a mother who is nursing, she read that it would dry up her milk. Thank you for any advise you might have. Becky

I took 1 tsp 5 days ago and then 1 tbsp the next day and then the 3rd day I passed 5-6 large comma shaped dead worms!! No pic!:-( BUT before that I was in pain from my head to my toes, shuffling like a sick old woman, could not use my right arm, every joint inflamed and bursitis in hips and shoulders. Well from the moment they were gone I have improved DRAMATICALLY!!! I have to say your post about this gave me the courage to take more that second day. I was also following the protocol in The New Arthritis Cure (lots of virgin coconut oil and oil pulling) for 2 weeks, had quit sugar entirely 3 years ago, never had fruit or grains and still got sicker and sicker, but no more!!!! I am 90% better 3 days later, but now dealing with other worms who are not happy being killed off. Even the ruptured discs in my back feel 90%better!!! I swear it is a miracle! My husband is blown away! THANK YOU!!!! I also have an awesome health coach, who told me about DE, https://www.facebook.com/LindaDeWittHealthCoach

I was hoping someone could help me. I was actually researching a natural way to keep horse flies from bothering my pony and stumbled across DE....and have been reading some pretty awesome testimonials for human consumption as well, however, I am stumped at which brand is best! I bought Red Lake food chemical grade codex but, am totally unsure if its good for human consumption. I have tried to do some online research but, am not happy with my search results. Does anyone know about Red Lake?

Stephanie Christie said...

I have the same question as Carol. Is Red Lake brand safe for human consumption? I called the company and they advised me NOT to consume it but I'm thinking it's due to strict FDA laws. I drank some the other day and gave some to my dogs and we are all still alive. The ash it contains is actually bentonite clay which I've read many health benefits about as well so I don't know why humans couldn't consume it safely and get the benefits of the DE and the bentonite clay.

Cathy Palmer said...

Stephanie and Carol, looking at Red Lake's website, it appears they do not sell Food Grade diatomaceous earth so go to another company as there are plenty others out there that do sell Food Grade DE. I buy mine via amazon.com from Natures Wisdom. Cheers!

Anonymous said...

Red lake earth says food grade on the packaging. My family and I (children included) took it for months with great results. Especially great for teeth. However it is much less palatable due to the clay in it. My husband likes the taste but I prefer the plain DE from permaguard.

Unknown said...

Buy it from a feed store. Most always stock 50 lb bags for about $30. Yes, I'm writing about food grade. Ask for food grade, of course. Buy smart.

Cathy Palmer said...

Thanks Carrie! We don't have too many feed stores here on the beach but found one that sells 50 lbs for $50 which for me is better than ordering online :)

I have been using Diatomaceous Earth for about 3 days I am 35 and have been suffering from bad body order. I am a very clean person. Almost OCD some say but this has been a very embarrising issue for me it makes ppl think I am not clean or don't shower. I have tried eveything from organic soaps to no soaps to all organic diets very little meats. I have senr mysw lf to the energency room by taking a bleach bath. Will not ever do that again..lol..My Dr.kept telling me its all in my head but I know better. When ppl are sitting around you with their hands over their face something is wrong...right? ??..Well since I have been taking DE these few days I have noticed that my body chemistry has taken a huge turn in such a short time. I have been bathing in DE and brushing my teeth with it and I must say I am so impressed all these years of embarrassment has subsided in just a few days. ANSWERS FOR Diatomaceous Earth (DE) AND A LOT MORE...
https://www.diatomaceousearth.com/faq/general/our-products/#my-50-lb-bag-has-pictures-of-animals-is-it-safe-for-me

IS IT SAFE FOR HUMANS?
Quick easy answers from Perma-Guard, world's major seller of Diatomaceous Earth.

My 50 lb bag has pictures of animals. Is it safe for me?
Yes. The diatomaceous earth in the 50 lb food grade bag is supplied by Perma-Guard. It is sourced from the same location as our own brand and is safe for eating.

What is the difference between Food Grade and Crawling Insect Control DE?
There is actually no difference in the two products. The reason for the different label is because we are meeting the standards of a different governing organization. The EPA regulates pesticides while the FDA regulates dietary supplements. In order to publish content on our site that covers both the health supplement and pesticide aspects of DE, we need two different labels. The price difference is to cover the cost of registration with the EPA. Please note that this isn't always the case with other companies. Don't assume all pest control DE is pure food grade. If you have any questions, contact the company that you purchased your diatomaceous earth from.

What is the difference between food grade and food chemical codex grade?
They are the same thing. We go through the Food Chemical Codex (FCC) to make sure our diatomaceous earth intended for human use meets requirements to be labeled as food grade.

ANSWERS FOR Diatomaceous Earth (DE) AND A LOT MORE...

On the other post I wanted to be notified but it appears the check mark didn't take so I'm trying again to put the check mark in "Notify me." Thanks

Cathy Palmer said...

Thanks Markc. Interesting to read that there's no difference between Food Grade DE and the rest. We pay more for a different label. Typifies the many crazy rules/regulations imposed on us.

Anonymous said...

Hi Cathy, I see that I am getting in on this really late but since I read through the posts I thought perhaps someone else might also. Your comment 'Interesting to read that there is no difference between Food Grade DE and the rest' may be a little misleading. There is actually a DE that is Pool Grade. It is extremely high in crystalline silica, 60% or more (Food Grade DE has less than 1%). Crystalline silica is produced by a heat process of the DE. This is absolutely 'no bueno' for consumption by humans/animals and can actually be harmful. Food Grade and Insect Control DE has amorphous silica. The amorphous silica based DE products are the ones safe for consumption by humans/animals. As for the different colors, the grayish DE (i.e. Red Lake) contains calcium bentonite which is also safe for consumption. To be absolutely sure that the DE is safe it should have Food Grade and/or Food Chemical Codex on the package.

Cathy Palmer said...

Good to know. Thanks for the info!

Anonymous said...

By the way Cathy, on a personal note, I pray that God is continuing to bless you as he does me. Meant to add that to my post.

Cathy Palmer said...

Thanks Friend!!

Anonymous said...

The problem is simple: silica has many benefits and people then write those as DE benefits. Instead it should say that silica has these benefits and DE contains silica but it is unknown how much silica (from DE) is absorbed into the body.

Shug said...

So, Cathy, you use the Perma-Guard brand for you and your family, correct?

Cathy Palmer said...

Not necessarily. In fact I just bought a 2 lb bag from Southern Housewares via Walmart for $6.

Shug said...

And you can consume this brand?

Cathy Palmer said...

Of course. I only buy Food Grade DE.

Isaac Munyiri said...

Hi,
Clearly food grade Diatomaceous earth (DE) is safe for human consumption.

The only difference is that the producers use different label to satisfy the regulations EPA (control pesticides) and FDA (regulates dietary supplements).

Therefore, it is safe to use the DE for its numerous benefits to humans.

Thank you
